Marlin 39a firing pin

Some times it will fire several shots OK but for the most part misfires are more often than not. Looking at the bases of the unfired rounds shows no sign of the firing pin striking.

Send your rifle to Marlin, have them fit the bolt, they will also replace any worn pa rts, and test fire it. It will be worth it, to have it done right. The Firing pin was super tight so much it was hard yo covk the gun. I worked on the firing pin. That is normal on the 39A. The firing pin floats in the bolt and depending on how clean the channel is that the pin rides in it will sometimes keep the firing pin from moving freely. It was the end of the firing pin.Idid the hammer strut modification and took about .030 off the rear face of the firing pin. Clipped 2 coils off the mainspring. It has helped. Still not 1" with the couple of different ammo I've tried. ,but a definite improvement. Even with the 2 coils off the hammer spring and the firing pin shortened a bit, it gives the rims a hard blow.
If he's been dry-firing it, it's possible the firing pin is mushroomed slightly or the spot where the firing pin hits on the barrel is peened so there's a dent there now which reduces the force the firing pin can put on it to pinch the rim of the cartridge. [also the advice in the post above is all good]

You should not find any firing problems, with any manufacturers ammo. You can have extraction problems, with match ammo because of the rim thickness.
