Parveen Shakir was born on November 24, 1952 in Karachi, Pakistan. She was the daughter of a Pakistani mother and an Iranian father. She was an avid reader from a young age and was particularly drawn to English and Urdu literature. She received her B.A. in English Literature from the University of Karachi in 1972.
